Back With A Bang

Federico Macheda may have claimed all the plaudits at Old Trafford but from a Villa perspective Gabby Agbonlahor was the real headline maker.

The out of form striker finally looked like he may hit the net and he did. A typically well placed header gave the Claret and Blue a 2-1 second half lead and gave Gabby a real boost.

The England striker, who was booed off against Tottenham not so long ago, heard his name echoing around the famous stadium.

Villa's fans were jubilant; they have waited too long to sing their favourite chant with real glee.

Agbonlahor had failed to score in his last eight outings and was left out of the first XI for the 5-0 defeat at Liverpool on March 22.

The international break obviously served him well - he looked like a new man. The young striker gave the ageing Gary Neville a torrid time with his inexhaustible pace and thoroughly deserved his goal.

Pie

Villa fans who gave him a tongue lashing in the home game against Spurs on March 15 must have been choking on their humble pie.

Gabby is back.

He now has to prove that he can be consistent both with goals and effort.
Villa have seven games left of their impressive campaign and that means seven more chances for Agbonlahor to impress his supporters and also impress Fabio Capello once again.

The England boss may have called Villa's leading marksman into his squad for the game against Ukraine last week but, make no mistake, Agbonlahor would not have been there but for a mountain of injuries in the striking department.

One of the men who would have featured had he not been crocked was Emile Heskey.

The big Villa striker was forced to miss the United game with that injury, giving Agbonlahor the chance to shine. Shine he did and not only on a personal level but also in his partnership with John Carew.

Pair

Heskey has struggled since his January arrival at Villa Park and his enforced absence was somewhat a blessing in little disguise.

Carew is the man on form when it comes to the Villa forward line and he deserves a prolonged run in the team.

Agbonlahor would certainly agree and the pair really do look like they know each other's game inside and out.

It is no coincidence that the younger of the two broke his goal duck and should the injury prone Carew stay fit, the most thankful man at Villa Park will be Agbonlahor.

The 22 year old has a heavy burden to bare and a Lamborghini to pay for and he will definitely now be expected to fire Villa to victory for the remainder of the season.

With a little help from a big Norwegian, not to mention a talismanic England midfielder and a couple of tricky wingers he may just get a few more goals and maybe even a cheer from the Villa Park faithful.
