Olof Outing

While Villa were taking on Reading at the Madejski, I made an odd venture to the home of Arsenal FC which was hosting the first day of the Emirates Cup.
But, my venture was not the only thing strange about the day.
I witnessed Olof Mellberg's first footballing return to England since he moved to Juventus from Villa in the summer.
Holte End hero Mellberg was in fine form as he shut out the Gunners to give Juventus a victory in North London.
But, the Swedish defender just didn't look right in the glowing gold kit of the Turin giants.

Legend

I half expected him to reappear after half time in a new Acorns emblazoned Villa strip. It wasn't to be.
Mellberg showed just why he is classed as a Villa legend by preventing Carlos Vela and Nicklas Bendtner any clear sight of goal in the first half.
The agile defender then proceeded to stifle Arsenal's main hit-man Emmanuel Adebayor who was brought on at half time.
The introduction of the Togalese striker was indicative of the superb performance by Mellberg.
Vela, Arsenal's young striking sensation, looked to test Mellberg at every turn but typically the Swede was equal to all of the Mexican's advances.

Outstanding

Speaking of Mexican, Mellberg and his partner in the Juventus central defense, Giorgio Chiellini, marshalled so well that the most excitement was an extended Mexican wave circulating the Stadium.
Mellberg was at his frustrating best as the Arsenal fans groaned in discontent. They could not surpass the rock at the heart of the Bianconeri defence.
Without bias, the former Villa defender was the outstanding man of the match.
He showed just why he is so admired and why he will be so missed by all fans.
You can't help thinking that a partnership between Mellberg and Martin Laursen should have been given more on-field time. They are both simply immense.
And you can't help thinking that you will go a long way to find a better defender than the former Racing Santander man-mountain.
Mellberg truly is a legend at Villa Park; let's just hope he is as loved by the Old Lady of Italy.
