Gerard Houllier is set to sever ties with the French Football Federation after failing to secure a sabbatical for his move to Aston Villa.
The 63-year-old asked for a year off from his job as France's technical director so that he could avoid resigning and being unable to work for Villa during his notice period.
Houllier had to wait a fortnight to take charge of his first game because of wrangling last month but the situation remains unresolved after the FFF's federal council refused to approve the sabbatical.
The FFF's acting president Fernand Duchaussoy expects Houllier to resign, with reports in France indicating this should happen in the next few days.
'Gerard had pledged to resign and he will keep his word.' said Duchaussoy. 'There is no doubt about that.'
Villa have won one and lost one in the Barclays Premier League under the former Liverpool boss, as well as reaching the fourth round of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 win against Blackburn in his first game at the helm.
