Villa boss David O'Leary confirmed the England under-21 skipper had apologised to both himself and his team-mates following his dismissal for dissent in the final few minutes of the 2-1 defeat at Fratton Park.

“I think he knows he’s let himself down and he’s entitled to be sent-off. Gareth is big enough and honest enough to admit that," the Villa boss told the clubs official website.

“He’s apologised to everyone in the dressing-room. He’s let himself down and he’s let his team-mates down.

“I think he’s a good lad. He’s a winner and through frustration he’s said a few things and he’s not denying that. He’s held his hands up and apologised to me straight away.”
