Liverpool have upped their bid for Gareth Barry by £2 million.
Rafa Benitez clearly believes he can get Barry on the cheap but Villa are staying resolute.
The original bid of £10 million which seemed to be made up of part exchange deals was dismissed as derisory by Martin O'Neill.
But Liverpool's Spanish boss has cheekily added an extra couple of million to the offer.
Does he really think it's enough for an England International?
Maybe not, but like an experienced bidder at an auction Benitez is starting low and not throwing the Anfield funds in at the deep end.
If Barry wants to leave then the Matador will have his man. The red flag could just entice the inspirational midfielder on to Merseyside.
But in this case Villa should not be tempted by money. The scenario: Keep Barry at all costs.
But if the player wants out, the club has no choice.
And this is something Benitez knows. He is prepared to sit at the back of the room chipping away with bids or rather comments.
Although he has acted immaturely, the former Valencia boss has the know how and the cash to grab Gareth.
It's up to you Mr Barry, but all at Villa Park hope they don't hear the sound of the hammer.
