Barry Completes Man City Move

Gareth Barry has signed for Mark Hughes' Manchester City ending a 12 year spell at Villa.

The England midfielder made his swift £12m move north after finalising terms and completing a medical on Tuesday.

Barry, who made his first appearance for the Claret and Blue in 1997, was linked with Liverpool continuously over the course of last summer but the men from Merseyside were unable to meet Villa's asking price.

Moneybags Man City had no such trouble this time around and the Hastings born lychpin took little time in deciding that his future now lies away from Villa Park.

However, Barry, who has signed a five year contract at Eastlands, will not be given a warm welcome on his return to the Midlands with a number of Villa fans unhappy at his departure.

Had the former Brighton trainee, as expected, left to join Liverpool or another top four side, then he would have still been viewed in a respectful manner.

After making comments last summer about wanting Champions League football, it seems strange that Barry should leave Villa for a club who won't figure in any European competition next season.

Many will believe that he has left for monetary gain, as he has reportedly been given a £100,000 per week contract at City, and therefore he is unlikely to be sent off with the best wishes of his former supporters.

The Claret and Blue will now be eyeing an instant replacement for their former skipper but it has to be said that manager Martin O'Neill faces no easy task.
