Villa's Swedish defender Olof Mellberg has refused to confirm his future at the club with speculation about a possible move to Italian giants Juventus increasing.
The colossal defender, who has played at right-back for most of the season, can move for free in the summer and he is not ruling out a move abroad. He told the Swedish newspaper Sportbladet: "The situation is the same as before. The focus is on Aston Villa, then we will see."
Mellberg has been a pivotal figure at the Villa since John Gregory signed him from Racing Santander in 2001 and fans will not want to see him leave.
The Swede enjoyed a spell as captain at Villa Park before being replaced by Gareth Barry but his place in the first team has never been in doubt.
Just as one Villa defender mulls over his future, another also faces uncertainty.
Dane Martin Laursen is also out of contract in the summer and Martin O'Neill is stalling on offering the towering centre-back a new deal.
Laursen has suffered plenty of injury setbacks since joining the club from AC Milan and O'Neill is right to be wary about investing in what many see as a risk.
However, Laursen has arguably been Villa's player of the season so far. If he is able to continue to prove his fitness, all at the club will want him to remain at the centre of defence for years to come.
Laursen was quick to emphasise his passion for the club and the supporters. He told the Birmingham Mail:
"I have been very pleased with Villa's support.
"They have always given me good support - and I am fine here. I am playing, I feel good, I have a good relationship with the manager and everyone around the club."
There seems to be no clear reason why Villa would want to let either player go on a free as they have been influencial this season and in the case of Mellberg, for many years.
So come on Martin sign 'em up!
