Curtis Davies was delighted when named in the England squad by new boss Fabio Capello on Thursday. However, his joy was short lived as he was cut from the final 23 man squad just two days later.
He joins Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, Nicky Shorey, Emile Heskey, Michael Carrick and Ledley King in International purgatory.
Davies' dismay was Gabby Agbonlahor's delight as he kept his place in the squad. It is richly deserved role for the young striker who has been in fine form at club and under 21 level.
The other three Villa players in the initial squad also kept their place as the Claret and Blue breeding ground reaped real rewards.
Gareth Barry, Ashley Young and Scott Carson are all likely to challenge for starting berths when Switzerland arrive at Wembley on February 6th.
