Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier praised the impact of substitutes Emile Heskey and Stewart Downing as his side overcame Burnley 2-1 in extra-time to reach the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup. Heskey opened the scoring in the second half and, after Clark Carlisle had equalised for the visitors, Downing's stunning strike settled the tie six minutes into extra-time. Houllier, who twice won the League Cup with Liverpool, said: "I don't take credit for the subs. I wanted to rest them. "But, with other players tiring, they made a difference. Subs have to be in the right frame of mind, have the right attitude. "If the hunger is there, they can make a difference. Their freshness can bring initiative - and they did that. Emile came on and changed the game."
