But fellow loan keeper Vito Mannone suffered a thigh injury in Saturday's 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
"We had a situation we had to act on and we're delighted to welcome Brad back," City assistant manager Craig Shakespeare told BBC Radio Humberside.
"We were a bit reluctant to see him go. It was circumstances, but we are delighted to have him back."
"He's a player that knows the club well, the club know him well and, with Vito's injury, he's a welcome addition at this stage of the season."
The US international, who has won 16 caps for his country, will go straight into the squad to face Burnley at the KC Stadium on Tuesday night.
As for Mannone, who is on loan from Arsenal, he faces a scan to discover the extent of the recurrent thigh injury.
"It's always worrying when there's a recurrence of an old injury," added Shakespeare.
"It's in the same area without really pinpointing it until he's had a scan."
Saturday's game against Forest was Mannone's first since the 1-1 draw with Reading on December 28.
