The club have confirmed via their official website that the Tottenham player will be sidelined for six months.
Jenas suffered the setback during Saturday's home reversal against Manchester United when he pulled up sharply.
It is a considerable blow for Jenas who had harboured hopes of regaining his England spot if he rebuilt his career at Villa.
But he has been dogged by injury problems since making the temporary switch to the Midlands in August, and manager Alex McLeish said: "This is tragic for Jermaine and, of course, we are all deeply disappointed for him.
"To lose a player of his talent and experience is bad enough, but never to have seen him play enough in the Villa shirt for our fans to appreciate the player he is, that's terrible bad luck.
"Obviously, we wish Jermaine as speedy a recovery as possible and a full recovery, too.
"He has been a great professional to have at the club since he arrived on loan in August."
Jenas had to wait until last month to make his Villa debut after calf and Achilles problems.
The game against the Red Devils represented his first start for the club after substitute's appearances against Norwich and Swansea.
