It was the dreaded announcement that every Villa fan expected - Martin Laursen is to retire from football.
The Danish defender is set to make a statement to the Press today (Friday) in which he will formally declare that he has retired from professional football due to a persistent knee injury.
The Villa skipper, 31, has been a massive figure for the club over the past two seasons and his absence has been felt towards the back end of this campaign.
As fans of the Claret and Blue know, Laursen is simply irreplaceable. He was the rock at the heart of a Villa backline that kept out the great and good of English football.
That same defence, lacking Laursen, now looks unlikely to cope in the Premier League next season without immediate reinforcements which illustrates just how important the former AC Milan man was to the side.
After completing a move from AC Milan in 2004, Laursen suffered an injury plagued start to his career in the Midlands but finally shot to prominence last season as he played all 38 Premier League games scoring six times.
The defender was a massive threat in the opposition penalty area and he helped Villa become one of the most feared set piece outfits in the league.
Blow
The big blonde centre back was rightly named Supporters Player of the Year at the end of that campaign and it looked like his injury jinx was finally over.
His amazing form continued at the start of this season as Villa started
brilliantly, looking like real contenders for a top four finish.
But, just as Laursen and his teammates began to look like Champions League challengers, a big blow was dealt.
The Dane suffered an injury against West Ham on December 20 and despite completing the full 90 minutes it was clear that he would be ruled out for the remainder of the Christmas period.
Laursen returned against West Brom on January 10 but he again felt discomfort and after the game admitted that he had rushed his comeback.
And, despite rumours that he may play again this season, fans and players alike have now accepted that Laursen will never line-up for Villa again
The lionhearted captain may never play in front of the Holte End again, but the Villa Park faithful will never forget a man who will go down in the history of the club alongside greats such as Paul McGrath and Olof Mellberg.
Martin Laursen - Villa legend.
