McLeish was happy to have some of his more experienced players back available for Saturday's 2-0 win over Wigan including strikers Darren Bent and Emile Heskey.
But he wants the likes of Marc Albrighton, Andreas Weimann, Ciaran Clark, Barry Bannan and Nathan Delfouneso to step up to the mark.
McLeish said: "We got injured players back against Wigan and it gave us great competition. It was good to look at the bench and see the experience.
"We have been impressed by Weimann, while, Nathan Delfouneso was unlucky to miss out. Boys like Albrighton will come again while Clark and Bannan have shown up well.
"It's a challenge for them now to be better than each other and let the best man win. We have said everything about the young players at this club. Now they have got to show they can step up to the plate."
