Newcastle United closing in on permanent Matt Targett deal

Newcastle United are close to completing the permanent signing of Matt Targett from Aston Villa following his successful loan spell at St James' Park, 90min understands.

The 26-year-old impressed massively for Newcastle in the second half of the 2021/22 season after joining on loan from Villa in January.

Eddie Howe became a huge fan of Targett during this time and has pushed the club to seal his signing on a permanent basis.

Newcastle have scoured the market and were offered other options at left-back, including Atletico Madrid's Renan Lodi, but they have opted to conclude a deal for Targett instead.

A deal worth up to £15m was already in place between the two clubs and Newcastle confirmed to Villa last week that they were pushing ahead with the move.

90min understands that Targett is due on Tyneside on Wednesday to conclude a medical after sporting director Dan Ashworth finalised terms.

Ashworth is currently working on a deal to sign another long-term target in Hugo Ekitike after Newcastle agreed a fee with Reims last week.

This week Harry Symeou steps in for Scott and the trio discuss the futures of Bukayo Saka, Rafael Leao, Romelu Lukaku, Kalvin Phillips, Youri Tielemans, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Raphinha, Gabriel Jesus and more.

The Magpies have agreed to pay €31m for the forward, although he will sign on an initial loan which will have a mandatory clause in order to help avoid any Financial Fair Play issues.

One deal which Ashworth has put the brakes on is for Manchester United's Dean Henderson. The goalkeeper and his camp were in talks with Newcastle, but Ashworth has since stepped in and is now looking at other potential options.
