The Villa had taken a deserved first half lead through Gareth Barry's deflected shot but United fought back in the second half and progressed to the fourth round stage courtesy of two Paul Scholes goals.

"We played marvellously well in the first half and when you do that you have to score more than one goal against a team like Manchester United.

"We had them rattled in the first half and Alex Ferguson had to point out a few things to them at half-time and they had to bring a few people on.

"I can't think of a better double act to come on than Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy in the world. It would take some beating.

"The biggest compliment I can give my players is that it has taken the 'full monty' to come on and beat us."
