The 24-year-old missed last weekend's 2-1 defeat of West Brom with a chest infection. It was the latest in a series of problems to have beset the England international this season after a number of injury problems.
Assistant manager Gary McAllister told the club's official website: "Gabby's back and we're delighted to see him back.
"He had a session yesterday morning (Tuesday) and he's coming back from his hernia operation. It's another one back which is good."
Midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, who returned from a knee injury with an appearance off the bench against West Brom, is now reported to be fully fit.
Defender Luke Young is also making good progress after a groin problem and could feature at the DW Stadium.
