Villa's Carling Cup fourth round tie will take place on Tuesday October 27 at 7.45pm, it was confirmed today.
The Claret and Blue beat Cardiff 1-0 at Villa Park to make it into the hat where they were drawn away to old adversary Steve Bruce and his Black Cats.
Bruce's boys beat his old team Birmingham 2-0 in round three to set up the clash against Villa.
Martin O'Neill has a fine history in the competition, having won it twice as a player with Nottingham Forest in 1978 and 1979 and then repeating the feat as manager of Leicester in 1997 and 2000
However, he had failed to guide Villa past round three in the last two seasons as his side were dumped out by Championship opposition on both occasions.
But he will now be looking to go all the way and, although a trip to the north-east will undoubtedly be tough, the Villans are typically good travellers and will hope to see off a talented Sunderland side.
