The midfielder is determined to stay at Anfield and fight for his place. He has worked hard in pre-season and has played well in what games he has been picked.
Insiders say he was disappointed to miss the recent trip to Valerenga as he wanted to keep proving to Kenny Dalglish what he can contribute alongside the latest batch of new signings.
The trouble for Cole is that the injuries he suffered at Chelsea have taken the edge off his pace. He still has the skill but the speed to move away from people is not what it was.
That won't stop other sides making a play for him though. Cole would be great at former club West Ham and would no doubt improve Premier League new boys QPR.
The one problem there is his wages. He is on ?100,000 a week and the best those clubs can contribute is around ?30,000 - that leaves Liverpool footing the bill for ?70,000 a week for a player they can't play.
If by August 31st Cole still feels he won't get a look-in at Anfield then he may change his mind but at the moment he feels he has as good a chance as anyone to claim a place in Liverpool's first team.
The French winger has failed to hit it off at Old Trafford since his ?3million move from Bordeaux in 2009.
His frustration at failing to make the breakthrough led to him asking to leave the club in the last transfer window.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson obviously still sees something in the 22-year-old as he persists in trying to make him a better player.
He was alerted to Obertan by France coach Laurent Blanc and that was as a good a recommendation as Obertan could expect.
However, there are now too many wide players ahead of Obertan at United, younger players are pushing for a place ahead of him and it is ideal to see if he can develop elsewhere.
That may mean a loan is best first and that could come at Newcastle who are struggling to get a few deals over the finishing line.
Manager Alan Pardew has brought in a lot of French-speaking players and Obertan can fit in nicely.
He can play wide or centrally and with question marks over the immediate fitness of Sylvain Marveaux and Hatem Ben Arfa he could have the chance to cement a place in the first team.
?FERNANDOPorto to Chelsea THE INSIDER says: 2/5
JUAN MANUEL VARGAS?Fiorentina to Aston VillaTHE INSIDER says: 2/5
Chelsea have completed the signing of Oriol Romeu from Barcelona but are continuing to look for another striker and midfielder.
Luka Modric at Tottenham remains at the forefront of their thinking but manager Andre Villas-Boas has also been considering a return to his former club Porto with Brazilian midfielder Fernando the latest name to be mentioned.
Fernando is a Brazilian who was an almost ever-present under Villas-Boas and enjoyed great success as a defensive midfielder.
With Romeu still considered a player who could take a little time to develop, Fernando may be the more ready-made replacement for Michael Essien.
Juventus and Inter Milan have also expressed strong interest in the 24-year-old and he is valued at an affordable ?14.5million.
Nicknamed the 'Octopus' for his ability to retrieve possession, Fernando would certainly give the Chelsea midfield extra legs and would allow Modric, should he join, and Frank Lampard the defensive foundation to forge forward in support of Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba.
Villas-Boas has so far avoided his former club but this could be the right price for him to deal.
The Peru midfielder is known as Jardo or El Loco - The Madman to fans in Peru. That may be more appropriate for Alex McLeish for going to Aston Villa in the first place but in Vargas he knows a player.
The 27-year-old looked good during the Copa America and was impressive last season.
Juventus are keen to sign him but fear they may be priced out of a deal with the Florence-based club looking at ?12million if he is sold to another Italian club. If he moves to England the price could come down to ?9million but that is still steep for Villa.
McLeish has signed Shay Given and Charles N'Zogbia and knows he can really only afford to maybe bring in a right-back and a couple of loans unless he sells first.
There is little choice on that front if they want to bring in bigger money with Emile Heskey, a possible option, preferring so far to stay at Villa rather than go to Leicester.
Talks over Alan Hutton are ongoing and although McLeish is keen on Scott Parker that again may be just out of reach financially.
Vargas has also interested Manchester City in the past and Liverpool this summer but looks a little too costly for the Premier League just now.
