"Molde Football Club is aware of interest and contact from Aston Villa, and is aware that Aston Villa and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are holding talks," read a brief statement on the Molde website.
Solskjaer, 39, has been the coach of Molde for two years, having played for the club before he joined United in 1996.
He spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford and scored 126 goals in 366 appearances, including the famous injury-time winner against Bayern Munich in Barcelona in 1999 that gave United their second Champions League title.
Molde are currently second in the Norwegian first division after nine matches.
McLeish was sacked by Villa on Monday after one season in charge at the club, who finished the Premier League season in a disappointing 16th place.
