Didier Drogba's countryman Aruna Dindane is being strongly linked with a move to England this summer and Villa have emerged as front runners in the race to sign him.
The Lens striker, who is described as 'world class' by Gervais Martel - the President of the French side, is said to be seeking pastures new and a move across the Channel is a distinct possibility.
Dindane has also been touted as a target for Spurs and Stoke but the Claret and Blue would hold the advantage should they make a bid as they can offer European football.
The 28 year-old Ivorian hotshot is keen to play in England and with French clubs priced out of the market for his signature it seems almost certain that he will be plying his trade here next season.
He could provide an ideal foil for current Villa striking trio John Carew, Emile Heskey and Gabby Agbonlahor and with 14 goals in 40 international appearances he comes with a good pedigree.
Now it is up to Martin O'Neill to take a punt on an unknown package. It seems unlikely but you never know where the unpredictable Northern Irishman is concerned.
