James Milner has handed in a transfer request at Newcastle, fuelling rumours he is set join Villa.
The Midlanders have been linked with £9m bid throughout the summer and Martin O'Neill is now set to pounce on Milner's discontent.
The England Under-21 winger almost moved to Villa after spending time on loan at the club two seasons ago but the deal was cancelled at the eleventh hour by the Magpies.
Milner, who shone for Kevin Keegan's men at Coventry on Tuesday, is keen to play European football and would fit in well in Martin O'Neill's predominantly English squad.
Villa are becoming an increasingly impressive package for young England hopefuls, who are aware that Fabio Capello will be a frequent visitor to Villa Park.
Newcastle will want the Milner done as quickly as possible as Keegan looks for a replacement.
However, the Ex-England manager is thought to be stunned by Milner's request and may not have any obvious targets in mind.
That could put a spanner in the works but Villa and Milner will make every effort to get the deal done.
