Ridiculous Friedel Rumours

It's nearly January so inevitably us journalistic types are on the look out for transfer activity.

But, even the most creative member of the media would have to go some to make the latest rumour surrounding Villa Park believable.

Apparently, the Claret and Blue are ready to swap American star Brad Friedel for England hopeful Robert Green.

Now, this is particularly crazy for a number of reasons. The first, is that Friedel has actually been the best stopper in the Premier League this season, putting in super shows like the one at Old Trafford on Saturday with increasing regularity.

Secondly, it is pretty obvious to anyone who knows anything about Villa, that manager Martin O'Neill is utilising the experience of his top keeper to train and mould back-up man Brad Guzan.

Guzan looks like a star of the future but to be honest he's pretty good now, as he showed in the Carling Cup shoot-out win at Sunderland.

The final reason, and the most important one, is that Friedel is actually a better keeper than the man who has been linked with his jersey.

Green is undoubtedly a great custodian but he has far less influence on his back four than the Villa man.

With Friedel between the sticks, the likes of Richard Dunne and Carlos Cuellar feel safe. With Green there they may have good reason to be a little uncertain.

So, why would O'Neill attempt to fix something that isn't broken? Yes, he may have a fettish for Englishmen, but his current No 1 is as good as British so it has to be said that the latest rumour is just a little ridiculous.
