Martin O'Neill could be set to snap up striker Darren Bent and gazump Steve Bruce's Sunderland in the process.
Bent, who was due to fly out to China with Tottenham, was forced to leave the plane at the last minute as news of a bid from Bruce emerged.
He then reportedly travelled to Wearside, but speculation is mounting that Villa and Hull have also made moves to sign the player.
Bent netted at Villa Park last season and with O'Neill keen to add to his already expansive English contingent it would not be a surprise to see the Spurs man sign on in the Midlands.
Hull, would seem to stand little chance of tempting the former Charlton striker as the transfer fee alone could prove to be a big stumbling block.
Sunderland, who have recently been the subject of a takeover, do have the necessary funds but should Bent want European football next season then they may struggle to persuade him that a move to Wearside is his best option.
The prolific England star will of course want to impress international boss Fabio Capello ahead of next year's World Cup in South Africa and a move to Villa Park could aid his aspirations. Now it is up to O'Neill to make a bid.
