Wilfred Bouma could recover from the horror injury, which marred Villa's Premier League build up, as early as December.
The stocky left back was expected to be out for around eight months after suffering a dislocated ankle against Odense at the end of July.
But, Bouma has been told that he could make his comeback before the turn of the New Year.
The news is hugely encouraging for Villa, who will be hoping they are still in the UEFA and Carling Cup competitions when the Dutch defender returns.
Nicky Shorey has been brought in as cover from Reading, but Bouma's return would provide a healthy competition.
Bouma has just signed a new two-year deal at Villa Park with the option of a third year.
The Villa squad now has a strength in depth that hasn't been seen for some time, meaning it's not just Bouma who has reason to be cheerful.
