Colombia suffer last-gasp loss

A goal from Marcelo Zalayeta with just five minutes remaining put a serious dent in Colombia’s hopes of a place in Germany next summer as Uruguay leapfrogged Angel’s side into fifth in the CONMEBOL standings. The Villa striker had made it 2-2 just four minutes earlier as Colombia recovered from conceding two Zalayeta goals in eight minutes either side of half time to make it 2-2 before the Juventus striker grabbed a late equaliser. Marcelo Sosa was dismissed soon after but there was no way back for Colombia.

Djemba-Djemba will be in more bouyant mood today after watching from the bench as a hat-trick from Osasuna striker Achille Webo saw Cameroon win a dramatic encounter against the Ivory Coast in Abidjan to take over at the top of the standings and put themselves on course for a fifth successive FIFA World Cup finals appearance. Chelsea’s Didier Drogba was on target twice for the home side.
