Friendly against Ajax

Ajax - at Villa Park - it must be a pre-season friendly right?
Actually, no! Because on Thursday night, Villa take on a top European team in competitive action for the first time in over 10 years.
The loyal Villa faithful have been waiting for this game since their heroes won against Spanish giants Atletico Madrid on home turf only to lose out on aggregate in the 1998 UEFA Cup quarter finals.
During that enthralling run, the Claret and Blue had seen off the likes of Bordeaux, Athletic Bilbao and Romanian powerhouses Steaua Bucharest.
The common link in each round was the way that Villa battled to good results away from home and then saw off the ties at Villa Park.
The reason for this was clearly the sensational atmosphere created on magical nights in the Midlands.
The side will be looking for more of the same against an Ajax side currently lying ninth in the Dutch League.
Encouragingly for Villa their opposition have failed to win away in domestic action this season and were thumped 5-2 at Heerenveen earlier this month.

Tricky

Marco Van Basten will be able to welcome back striker Dario Cvitanich, who could start up front alongside dangerman Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
Villa are likely to change the side which drew with Portsmouth at the weekend as Martin O'Neill opts to bring back Nicky Shorey and Luke Young in defence.
That should mean Carlos Cuellar missing out along with James Milner, who had a tough full debut against Harry Redknapp's men.
If Villa are as up for the cup as they were ten years ago then the fans are in for some real magical moments.
The big European nights are billed as ones 'to remember' and hopefully the players wont disappoint the advertising department as they did against QPR in the Carling Cup.
The fans, although appreciating the nature of the night, will want win and probably recognise that three points are vital with tricky trips to Prague and Hamburg afoot.
Friendly it won't be on Thursday as Villa face up to big European nights at home once again.
