Darren Bent impressed watching England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson but could not find a way to break the deadlock at The Valley.
The Charlton striker was in fine form before the break, but like his team-mates faded in the second half as Villa kept up their recent impressive away form to take a point in this 0-0 draw.
It was Charlton's second goalless encounter in four days having drawn 0-0 at Newcastle in midweek.
Charlton have now only conceded one goal in seven home Premiership games and that was against Arsenal.
They dominated the opening period against Villa, who took 45 minutes to get a shot on target. When it arrived James Milner's effort was turned away by Thomas Myhre.
Villa arrived at The Valley unbeaten in seven away games having only lost four out of 13 matches on their travels, but they were under pressure early when Darren Bent's header was saved by Thomas Sorensen.
The Charlton hitman then broke clear and Sorensen again saved, before the England hopeful caused problems in the Villa defence, curling another effort just wide.
It was a different Villa after the break however, with Luke Moore replacing Aaron Hughes. Moore had scored a hat-trick in Villa's previous away game at Middlesbrough, but was left on the bench.
After Darren Ambrose and Jay Bothroyd had both gone close for the home side it was Villa who looked more likely to snatch a breakaway goal with Olof Mellberg heading over and Kevin Phillips producing a fine save from Myhre as he shot on the turn after coming on as a sub for Juan Pablo Angel.
In the end both teams were probably happy with the point as they edged closer to mid-table Premiership safety.
