Everton To Exact Revenge?

Villa will play Everton in the F.A. Cup fifth round after defeating Championship strugglers Doncaster Rovers.

Goals from Steve Sidwell, John Carew and teenage striker Nathan Delfouneso wrapped up a comfortable win for the Claret and Blue.

Jason Price did give the Vikings hope when he slotted home in first half injury time with the score at 2-0 but his effort proved in vain on a night when Villa fans got the chance to pay their respects to former hero Paul Birch.

A minutes silence was held before kick-off as the Villa Park stood silent for the legendary midfielder.

Birch, a former player at Doncaster, will also be fondly remembered by fans of the men from the Keepmoat Stadium.

Villa did not disappoint in their tribute to Birch as they raced out of the traps in a bid to put the tie to bed.

After missing a host of golden opportunities during the first meeting of the sides, the Claret and Blue looked determined to be more ruthless.

Despite resting Gareth Barry and Gabby Agbonlahor among others, Villa set about their opponents with tenacity and it was Sidwell who opened the scoring on 15 minutes.

Walk

The ginger ninja, as he is affectionately known, grabbed his fourth goal of the season after keeper Neil Sullivan diverted a Craig Gardner effort into his path.

Next to register was John Carew, who saw his shot from the edge of the box take a deflection and loop over the helpless ex-Wimbledon stopper.

Villa looked set to walk the rest of the game but as any fan knows, it is never that easy.

After suffering embarrassing home defeats to Q.P.R. and MSK Zilina in recent cup campaigns, Villa were understandably wary of their lower league opposition.

And they were right to be, as just before half time Rovers sprung an attack and James Coppinger steered the ball towards Price who placed the ball into the net.

It was a good time for the away side to score and they were expected to come out firing after the break.

Doncaster didn't disappoint and they soon tested Brad Guzan as captain Brian Stock hit a tremendous 30 yard effort, which was well saved by the American keeper.

Villa seemed stunned by the possibility of the tie becoming level once more and the Premier League side consequently stepped it up a gear.

Proposition

Nicky Shorey, still at the club despite being heavily linked with a move away during the transfer window, burst forward and sent in a great ball for Nathan Delfouneso.

The young frontman, who scored against MSK Zilina on his home debut, managed to divert an adept header into the corner of the Donnie net to effectively end the tie.

It was a relief for the home fans, who may just have been considering the possibility of an equaliser for the minnows.

Villa were then able to relax and ponder who they would be meeting in the fifth round on February 15.

A trip to Merseyside was a certainty but Villa were unsure whether they would meet Everton or Liverpool who were replaying at Goodison Park.

A Dan Gosling strike two minutes from the end of extra time settled the match meaning it will be the Toffees who take on Villa.

David Moyes' men will want revenge for a last gasp defeat to the Claret and Blue when the sides met in December.

But, Villa are a difficult proposition away from home and it makes for a very interesting tie.
