Midweek Madness

It must be something about the dark night sky hanging over Villa Park that the Villa players don't like.
Every time that the Claret and Blue are scheduled to play at home on Tuesday or Wednesday, a poor performance beckons.
It has almost become a regular occurrence, for fans walking towards the ground with the night drawing in, to wonder whether Villa will show their true selves.
Against Blackburn during the first half it was the same old story.
It was the same old story that was played out against Leicester in the Carling Cup third round last year.
It was the same old story that was played out against Middlesbrough in the league last year.
And it was the same old story that was shouted from the rooftops in frustration against QPR in the Cup just a month, or so, ago.
Thankfully, this time the tale had a happy ending.
But you wouldn't have thought it would be happily ever after when Stephen Warnock, the former Liverpool left back slotted neatly past Brad Friedel on 30.
It was a neat move from Rovers, who were rocked prior to kick off as Roque Santa Cruz was forced to pull out of the game.
Villa looked devoid of ideas with just Gabby Agbonlahor up front. He looked lonely and isolated.
But, just before half time, Villa's prolific goalscorer stepped up to the plate.
No not Agbonlahor or even Gareth Barry, but Luke Young.
The right back, signed from Middlesbrough bundled in after the ball ricocheted around the box.
It was a really welcome goal for Villa, who needed a boost going into the break.

Tally

During the 15 minute respite Stiliyan Petrov was withdrawn to be replaced by big John Carew, who made such an impact at Wigan on Sunday.
Blackburn it was, though, who continued to threaten after the break with both Brett Emerton and Warnock again going close.
Villa eventually got themselves together and grabbed the lead.
Barry, who is simply unstoppable in front of goal at the moment, added another to his tally after fine work by James Milner.
The determined winger held off the Blackburn defence before beating them to the by-line and playing in a low cross for Barry.
The Villa fulcrum couldn't miss with the goal gaping from just three yards.
Blackburn tried to respond and Friedel was forced into a fine stop from former team mate Morten Gamst Pedersen.
But, it was Villa who made it safe as Agbonlahor finished brilliantly from an Ashley Young through ball.
Emerton curled in a free kick with virtually the last kick of the game but it seemed like a new dawn at Villa Park as the sky grew increasingly black.
Villa had managed to win a midweek Premier League game at home and more importantly claimed a third win in a row.
The side now sit fourth in the table and a touch of consistency has been achieved.
Villa will now hope to carry on their sparkling form in another night game against the black and white army of Newcastle on Monday night.
