Villa with only a single away goal this season against the Red Devils and no wins were in control from the start, but against a solid defence failed to test Oxford keeper Andy Woodman with a single shot on target in the first half.
Dion Dublin went closest with two headers narrowly wide but the Premiership club eventually wore down the home defence.
It held out until the 74th minute when a right-wing corner was not cleared and Ian Taylor scored from close in.
Two minutes later Woodman presented Villa with a second, a not too powerful shot from Gareth Barry slipped through his hands and into the net.
The scoring was completed by Dublin four minutes from the end.
