A stroll down Wigan Pier
Last updated : 29 December 2007 By Tom Vickers
Wigan Pier has long gone, but it is still iconic in Wigan. Wigan Athletic FC is busy trying to lift the profile of the Club to a similar iconic status. In this bastion of rugby league there are many who doubt the worthiness of Wigan FC to wear the sporting crown of the local area.
Since its promotion to the Premiership, Wigan FC has worked hard to consolidate its position in the top league. This season the team has been somewhat inconsistent and has been struggling to keep out of the bottom three. The recent change of management and the introduction of Steve Bruce has revitalised the team and results have been good.
So this weekend the Villans need to be as fully committed as they were against Chelsea on Wednesday. This will not be a stroll down Wigan Pier!! Mr Bruce will not allow his team to be the circus show at the end of the pier.
Wigan will be a well organised outfit and Mr Bruce is likely to be on a personal revenge mission. No doubt we won't be buying him a candy floss at half time and he will be greeted with the usual warm welcome dealt out to him by the Villa fans.
Villa's results against Wigan in the Premiership to date have not been impressive and it would be nice to get our first top notch win against them.
So let's all enjoy our day out. Let's build a great holiday atmosphere at Wigan. Hopefully we will reflect on our 'stroll down Wigan Pier' for all the right reasons at the end of the match.
I have a feeling that we will win this by the odd goal. No doubt it will be a dogged battle with no nonsense uncompromising football.
Come on you Villa boys!!!
